Man would still be dead if not for a pocketknife carrying doctor

Stan and Jaci Wisniewski. Stan is the oldest living cardiac arrest survivor. (Eric Reed/Pasadena Star-News Staff Photographer)

Fascinating story about one, Stan Wisniewski. On Dec. 10th, 1954, he died and yet, last week he celebrated his 55th anniversary- of his second life.

And all because a doctor had an EDC.

The Pasadena Star-News reports Stan died of cardiac arrest while in a hospital’s X- ray room at the age of 24. Dr. David Brown was called in and quickly realized he had nothing to lose, so he opened Stan up with his pocketknife and cut out two ribs to start internal massage and the rest is history.

“There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t give at least a few seconds thought to what happened back in 1954, ” Wisniewki said. “You’re here today and you’re gone tomorrow.”

…I wonder if it was a Case XX (1940- 1964).

Sixth Grader Kicked Out Of School For Knife In Her Purse

Here we go again. Got another case of a school grossly overreacting and guess what- it didn’t happen in Massachusetts or California. No, it happened a little closer to home for me- yeap, right here in Sweet Home Alabama.

The incident when down like this- a sixth grade girl was suspended for 103 days because she brought a knife to school in her purse.

The story, as reported on WKRP TV, has the typical tit for tat with the school officials defending the severity of their decision- based it on the character of the child, previous discipline- even going back to the young lady’s kindergarten records, and statements obtained by her teacher and other children.

Play-doh set with knife

Good grief- they are using her behavior as a 5-year-old to defend suspending her as a 12-year-old.

What did she do back then- cut up another little girl’s play-doh doll with the little plastic knife that comes with the set?

OK, OK, I am finally getting an EDC

cnjftheligside

Last week, one of our CNJ readers posted a comment about me being a uber geek. Now, I need to clear the air of a couple of things.

While I took no offense, I want to make sure you know I am equally passionate about knives.

I have to confess though I do get pretty excited about all things Mac (Apple Computers). I have a blast playing on my computer, publishing CNJ, and chatting with fellow collectors on forums, YouTube and by email.

I also know I tend to foster the geek image as a result of me taking it upon myself years ago to promote the fun of our hobby via the World Wide Web.

Computer nerd posing as a knife collector

The members of ElephantToenails.com know a dark secret I shared a few years ago. It is one that has made some folks think I am really just a computer nerd posing as a knife collector.

So, in an effort to set the record straight- I’ll tell you too.

I don’t have an EDC (and never have). I did buy one off eBay specifically as an EDC, but couldn’t bring myself to carry it…it was a used Case XX redbone toenail. I’m just too much of a collector to bring myself to use it.

Now, if you don’t know what an EDC is I am sorry, but I won’t further embarrass myself by explaining what it is.

I could sit here and give you all the reasons/excuses for why I don’t have one (travel a lot, don’t get into “cutting” situations often, etc, etc.,), but the EDC situation is a bit more problematic for me because my favorite knife isn’t easily carried in my britches pocket, OK?

The Problem Is Now Solved

Well, I think I have solved the problem now. I found a knife I want for Christmas (another one actually). From here out I will be able to hold my head up high around all my knife friends.

All will now know I am really not a computer nerd posing as a knife collector because I will be a card carrying member of the EDC Club.

With that said, I’d like to introduce my EDC:

What type of Knife Person Are You?

So, what type of knife person are you? Are you a collector? If so, which type? Oh, you don’t actually collect knives, instead you just have a several different knives that are your EDC (Every-Day Carry) knives? You are a collector and just haven’t realized it yet.

I ran across a good overview of the different types of knife people and wanted to share it with you.

Basically, the author outlines 6 different knife “collector” types.

  • The History Collector
  • The Antique Collector
  • The Custom Knife Collector
  • The Mechanism & Steel Blade Collector
  • The Personal Use Collector
  • The Basic User

It was written by Dr. K. Click HERE to check it out.

I have to admit, while I was at one time a Custom Collector and still find them extremely appealing (meaning I have a weakness for cool knives), I am solidly a combo of The History and Antique Collector at this point.

If you are curious as to the knives I spend my time hunting, I invite you to ElephantToenails.com

So, have you identified the type of “collector” you are? Dr. K points out- “if you discover what your knife interests are early, it can save you a lot of money being spent on a knife that later on you wish you could sell….”
