My Favorite Knife Video Contest- First Place Winner

The 2009 First Place Winner of the My Favorite Knife Video- The Taste of Blood by Ally Burnham.

I think you will find her video extremely interesting. Through it she shares with us her My Favorite Knife story- while never saying a word!

I thought you would be interested in learning a little more about Ally and her knife collecting hobby, so we arranged it so she can tell us herself. She represents the next generation knife collector.

Ally is a new member of iKnifeCollector– the new online knife collector community.

We appreciate each contestant for taking the time and energy to plan and produce their vid. And we look forward to hosting the contest again next year.

youtubeThe entries are in. I have to check the fax machine at our office to see if any others came in late yesterday afternoon or last night, but otherwise, the contest is closed.

Here’s what happens now- Next week the judges will render their decision and the winners will be announced here, as well as contacted via email. Then, I’ll interview of the top winners and introduce them to us.

Thanks to Jeff Smith for producing his YouTube video promoting the contest. Over 5700 views for that vid! The National Knife Collectors Association promoted the contest to all its members- Thanks Lisa! The NKCA will be giving one year memberships as part of the awards too.

More to come next week as we announce the winners.

The Next Generation Knife Collector Community

I want to join a knife community. I’ve looked at a bunch. Searched the web- deep and wide- and it ain’t there. Not like what I’m looking for.

What I am looking for is a combination- 24/7 Knife Show, YouTube, Flickr, MySpace, FaceBook, Yahoo Group, Cutlery News Journal and knife forum- all rolled into one, all exclusively for knife collectors. (more…)

There’s a storm brewing

Weekend Edition

From the Off The Subject category

Just so you guys don’t think I’m always intense and serious, and in keeping spirit with lighter subjects in the Weekend Edition-

We had storms down South yesterday. My wife and 3 daughters are in FL for spring break and I’m home alone with my 17 year old son. He’s got baseball playoffs going on which is why we stayed home.

He and I rode the storm out together, alone.

Weekend Edition

The hardest part of anything is getting started. To help prime the pump let me ask- How are you at making decisions? Are you quick and decisive, or deliberate and wishie washie?

After reading the comments so far about the My Favorite Knife Contest, it doesn’t appear getting folks to enter is a problem. Instead, it seems these folks biggest challenge is deciding which of their knives is their most favorite.

As I shared with the toenail collectors over at The News at Elephant Toenails.com this morning, I have the same problem. While I’m not eligible to enter the contest, my wife asked me which was my favorite out of my collection. I realized, I don’t really have a #1 Favorite.

It is like being forced to pick which of my 4 kids is my favorite- I can’t do it.

So, for you who are like me and can’t make that decision- I can make the decision for you- JUST PRETEND.

The knife you use doesn’t really have to be, deep down in your heart of hearts, your all time favorite, OK? So, don’t get hung up trying to decide. If you do, you’ll never get started.

We can all narrow it down to at least a short list of  favorites-  so just pick one of those and then pretend.

Have fun!

Merry Christmas & the 12 days before

1953 Boker Tree Brand Christmas Ad

I’m trying to catch up with my family in getting into the Christmas spirit.

If you are like me and have been so busy you haven’t had a time to get ready for the Holidays, then take a break and enjoy this Acapella group singing a medley of songs to the 12 Days of Christmas. It is really good. In fact, I’m feeling better already.

Merry Christmas! I’ll be posting over the Holidays, so if you need a knife news fix, come on by.

Introduction to Great Eastern Cutlery’s Knife Patterns

GEC Cuban Cigar Stockman

GEC Cuban Cigar Stockman

While at Parker’s Knife Show this past weekend, I had a chance to chat with Ryan Daniels, Sales Manager of Great Eastern Cutlery of Titusville, Pa. They produce high quality knives from vintage patterns and he takes a minute to share a few of their knives with us.

Great Eastern specializes in collectible and premium pocket, hunting and kitchen knives. Their brands include Tidioute Cutlery, Northfield Un-X-LD and Great Eastern Cutlery.

Ryan invited us to come up and tour their factory in Titusville. When you are up in their area, give him a call and see their knives made first-hand.
