Knife Rights Law Updates

Doug Ritter, Executive Director of Knife Rights, keeps us informed of our legislative progress on a regular basis.

Got this one via text last night late-

Update on Arizona Knife Law Preemption Bill

This afternoon, our Knife Law Preemption Bill was passed by the Committee of the Whole (COW) on a voice vote with no debate or amendments. This was the last opportunity for any amendments to be added and none were offered, which is a good sign for us. The COW vote is the last critical step before the final floor vote in the Senate, which is anticipated next week. We are also pleased to announce that at their monthly meeting last night, the Copper State Cutlery Association voted unanimously to support our Knife Law Preemption Effort and this bill.

Update on NH Knife Rights Bill

Just a quick update to let you know that Rep. Jenn Coffey’s New Hampshire Knife Rights Bill has passed the full NH House of Representatives (400 Legislators) with a unanimous vote on the consent calendar. Congratulations to Rep. Coffey on this critical vote. Next stop is the NH Senate, which could be a bigger challenge. Our lobbyist is already hard at work helping to get this bill through the Senate. Help pass this Knife Rights Bill in New Hampshire and send a message to other states with similar archaic knife laws.

The noblest sport- fighting for our rights

“Aggressive fighting for the right is the noblest sport the world affords.”     Theodore Roosevelt

Recently CNJ introduced New Hampshire State Representative Jennifer Coffey and her initiative to legalize carrying stilettos, switch knives, daggers and dirk-knives. Currently in New Hampshire it is illegal to carry these knives.

Now there is an online petition to show support. The goal is 1000 signatures.  While most of live out of state, Attorney E. F. Nappen wants all the Knife World to show their support.

“This petition is to raise awareness and support. Out of state signers show the national support for the effort.”

Evan Nappen, Attorney at Law

Dressing down to protest Airport security measures

Today’s front page of The Wall Street Journal reports on looking for knives. Yeap, the instrument of our favorite hobby made big news. Well, actually it’s the folks protesting the full body scan looking for knives, and weapons, that’s the point of the story.

I’ll let you read it, but gotta show you the bold initiative of these protestors- saying they are dressing down to show their displeasure is an understatement, for sure.

BARING THEIR DISMAY: Members of the Pirate Party parade through Berlin's Tegel Airport in their underwear Sunday to protest government plans to test full-body scans as an invasion of citizens' privacy.

Man would still be dead if not for a pocketknife carrying doctor

Stan and Jaci Wisniewski. Stan is the oldest living cardiac arrest survivor. (Eric Reed/Pasadena Star-News Staff Photographer)

Fascinating story about one, Stan Wisniewski. On Dec. 10th, 1954, he died and yet, last week he celebrated his 55th anniversary- of his second life.

And all because a doctor had an EDC.

The Pasadena Star-News reports Stan died of cardiac arrest while in a hospital’s X- ray room at the age of 24. Dr. David Brown was called in and quickly realized he had nothing to lose, so he opened Stan up with his pocketknife and cut out two ribs to start internal massage and the rest is history.

“There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t give at least a few seconds thought to what happened back in 1954, ” Wisniewki said. “You’re here today and you’re gone tomorrow.”

…I wonder if it was a Case XX (1940- 1964).

Sixth Grader Kicked Out Of School For Knife In Her Purse

Here we go again. Got another case of a school grossly overreacting and guess what- it didn’t happen in Massachusetts or California. No, it happened a little closer to home for me- yeap, right here in Sweet Home Alabama.

The incident when down like this- a sixth grade girl was suspended for 103 days because she brought a knife to school in her purse.

The story, as reported on WKRP TV, has the typical tit for tat with the school officials defending the severity of their decision- based it on the character of the child, previous discipline- even going back to the young lady’s kindergarten records, and statements obtained by her teacher and other children.

Play-doh set with knife

Good grief- they are using her behavior as a 5-year-old to defend suspending her as a 12-year-old.

What did she do back then- cut up another little girl’s play-doh doll with the little plastic knife that comes with the set?

Outlaw knives and then you get Pit Bulls!

Vicious: Seizures of pit bull terriers have soared to record levels as gangs swap knives and guns for dogs

Obviously it wasn’t the knife to begin with. No, it was the bad guys who are the problem and now they have replaced their EDC with a different lethal weapon.

Yes, it’s true. Reported in today’s Mail Online, England police now have their hands full trying to keep up with the record levels of this new weapon. The RSPCA has called for a crackdown on the powerful animals and other illegal breeds to tackle the growing risk to the public.

BREAKING KNIFE NEWS: It is now a done deal

AKTI_logoBREAKING NEWS FROM AKTI:

presIt’s Law!  The President signed the Homeland Security Appropriations Bill (H.R. 2892) for FY 2010 late yesterday (Oct. 28, 2009) that includes a permanent “fix” so that any folding knife with a bias toward closure cannot be declared a switchblade by U.S. Customs.

New Hampshire State Legislator Introduces Pro-Knife Bill

BillofRightsIn today’s anti-knife world, it is a rare treat to see someone in politics promoting knife rights. In New Hampshire, State Representative Jennifer Coffey has introduced a bill to actually legalize “stilettos, switch knives, daggers and dirk-knives” for all law-abiding citizens there, according to KnifeRights.

This bill focuses the law on the criminal use of the knives, while removing the probation against them. Rep Coffey is a very pro-second amendment supporter of the rights to bear arms and outlines her position at SecondAmendmentSisters.org.

“Knife rights and gun rights both come under the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution. The Second Amendment refers to ‘arms,’ not guns.”

New Hampshire State Representative Jennifer Coffey

It will be interesting to watch this bill’s progress and CNJ will keep you updated.

Police in Scotland get new weapon in their fight to stop knife carrying

When you want folks to stop carrying knives what do you do, get a portable knife scanner, of course.

Yes, as reported in The Press and Journal and Herald Scotland, Scotland is providing every (police) force there one of these knife scanners. It seems of the 257,000 searches it conducted from April 08 to March 09 where 1,663 weapons (mostly knives) were confiscated, the Violence Reduction Unit’s ongoing anti-violence campaign just isn’t getting the job done. Now suspected knife carrying citizens will be scanned. In addition, Scottish courts have recently been given powers to impose four year sentences for knife carrying.

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said the Scottish Gov. allows officers to scan people suspecting of carrying knives in public places. He further added,

“The message has to be clear: carry a knife and go to jail.”

Both newsources indicate the scanner can be set up in one minute, which leads me to believe it is not a handheld device and, instead, is probably similar to the one pictured as used in London, called the Gatescan Knife Arch, designed as a mobile portable gatescanwalkthrough metal detector used to identify people carrying knives.knifearch
