Looking for a pocket knife?

Weekend Edition

googleIf someone wants to buy a pocket knife today, what do they do? Sure they can go down to Walmart, but what fun is that?

Most folks today “let their fingers do the walking,” except it isn’t through the Yellow Pages anymore. Instead they turn to Google.

Google provides a wealth of information. My family turns to it almost everyday for something. The other day we were debating the origin of saying “God bless you” when someone sneezes- so off to Google we ran.

Google provides us a glimpse of what people are thinking at any point in time.

In addition to watching our hobby from the grass-roots level, I also like to watch it from a bird’s-eye perspective. One of the ways I do this is to watch the Google trends related to various “Knife” search terms.

In today’s edition of CNJ, I wanted to share a few interesting observations about the search term “pocket knife” from the world of Google.

Top States Searching Pocket Knife

Let me first ask, “Which state in the US has searched that term more than any other?”

Here are the top ten states to search “pocket knife” over the last 5 years

  1. Kentucky
  2. Tennessee
  3. Oklahoma
  4. Sweet Home Alabama
  5. Arkansas
  6. Mississippi
  7. Kansas
  8. Missouri
  9. Texas
  10. Indiana

What does that mean? Well, I can only speculate, but if we take it at face value- the folks in these states, compared to the others, have been thinking about pocket knives more over the last 5 years.

Let’s see what happens when we take it to say-  the last 90 days. It changes once again-

  1. Ohio
  2. Texas
  3. Georgia
  4. North Carolina
  5. Florida
  6. Illinois
  7. Pennsylvania
  8. New Jersey
  9. New York
  10. California

If we take it all the way down to the last 30 days, then California leads the way. Kinda makes you wonder if the politicians there are working on a knife ban or something… Sorry, my cynicism bubbled out.

Most Popular Time of Year

When would you guess would be the two highest search times of year for “pocket knife?”

If you guessed December and June you are correct. December – looking for Christmas presents, &  June – getting ready for outdoor activities- for those who didn’t get a knife for Christmas.

Here you will also notice the overall trend over the last 5 years is basically flat for both the peak and low search times. That’s good news for knife manufacturers because there doesn’t appear to be fewer folks searching for “pocket knife” as a result of the recent economic slowdown.

Wrap Up

I thought you would find some of these pocket knife search factoids interesting. For you who find this type info a bit dry, I promise not to make it a weekly report.

But, I can promise you this- if I made or sold knives for a living, I’d be watching these trend reports weekly- in order to know where and when to buy my Google AdWords, but we’ll maybe get into those another day.
